The Texas research was done in mice, but the results are so stunning that the team plans to move quickly into human trials.
"We know this is an effective preventive at low doses - the question is whether larger doses can be therapeutic for disease sufferers," declared Dr Bharat Aggarwal, who works at the cancer center's Experimental Therapeutics Department.
Advanced breast cancer, which kills more than 40,000 U.S. women each year, is notoriously difficult to cure because it tends to spread even after surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy.
And one of the most effective drugs, taxol, has the unfortunate side effect of actually stimulating the cancer to split into seeds or "metastases" and start to spread.
But when curcumin is added to the mix it totally prevents metastases. It also reduces taxol's toxicity without blunting its effectiveness.
The Texas study showed that in cancerous mice, treatment with curcumin "significantly reduced" the spread of cancer.
And the taxol-curcumin combination wiped out all visible signs of cancer and nearly all microscopic signs.
"We are excited about the results of the study and the possible implications for taking the findings into the clinic in the next several years," said Dr. Aggarwal.
The study appeared in the October 15 issue of Clinical Cancer Research.
