The Definition of Progesterone

Progesterone is a male and female hormone. In women, progesterone is the principal progestational (ie. the name PRO GESTATION) hormone that is made mainly by the corpus luteum in the ovary and by the placenta.

One of the main functions of progesterone in women is to prepare the lining (endometrium) of the uterus (the womb) to receive and sustain the fertilized egg.

This necessary action permits pregnancy. Similarly, but incorrectly,  refers to synthetic versions of the hormone which are called progestins.

Progesterone Known as Progestational Hormone

Progesterone is one of two important hormones for women. (Estrogen is the one we usually hear about). Menstrual cycle hormone levels can be unbalanced, even during regular cycles by many factors. The most common imbalance is of ovulation causing progesterone levels to become too low or absent.

Your doctor may prescribe synthetic progesterone, correctly called progestins, to control heavy periods, severe menstrual cramps (dysmenorrhea) or to help with irregular periods, acne, unwanted hair, low bone density, or sore and lumpy breasts.

Natural progesterone therapy may also help achieve fertility—but don't use synthetic medroxyprogesterone. Use natural progesterone cream like Progest.

Natural progesterone therapy has been found very useful during perimenopause for night sweats, breast tenderness, depression, anxiety or heavy flow.

What Medications Can I Choose?

First of all, many women have stopped taking Provera®. Medroxyprogesterone (previously called Provera®) is a progestin, a chemical form of progesterone and has been used for over 40 years. It is a very close cousin of natural progesterone, but it is not the real thing, The only reason drug companies make and market this deadly chemical, is that they can patient it to protect their ability to make a profit. We are not against drug companies making profits, but in this case, it is at the expense of women's health. This was recently proven by the  results of the WHI hormone replacement therapy studies and its abrupt stoppage. Provera® is cheap, promoted heavily on tv and by doctors, but it is dangerous.

Micronized progesterone progesterone creams are available on the internet from reputable companies. Often called natural progesterone, this medication will have important, positive effects on flow, breasts and bones.  Progesterone
